Roy Harper – “South Africa”

But… but… where are the drums?

Roy Harper isn’t South African. But I was thinking about it – for about ten seconds – and I figured: why not kick off my new WordPress blog with a guy from the 60s who now lives in Ireland, has recorded 23 studio albums, and sounds a LOT younger than his legendary status would suggest. And the song’s called “South Africa“, anyway. So… yah.

The cool thing about it is that it doesn’t exploit that aggravating Disneyfication of “Africa” thing; those faux-tribal drums over synthy pads and the African choral incantations. You know what I’m talking about – heard in every single Hollywood movie that cuts to a scene in the “Africa”. Ever.

For that, I want to thank Roy Harper. That and finally providing me with a real clue as the identity of Syminn Snodgrass’ (of Tape Hiss and Sparkle) musical granddad.
